Outlander author Diana Gabaldon joins big writers backing Book Week

Hundreds of thousands of free books will be given away during a week long celebrations of books.

Over 300,000 books will be given away during the annual Book Week Scotland campaign announced for November.

Authors such as Paula Hawkins who wrote The Girl on a Train and creator of the Outlander series Diana Gabaldon are set to make appearances this year, with hundred of free events confirmed to take place in every local authority across Scotland.

Other big names included in the 2015 line-up include Labyrinth author Kate Mosse, Scottish crime writer Val McDermid as well as Michel Faber, AL Kennedy and Arne Dahl.

Following the theme of ‘transformation’, a new campaign called #ThankBooks has also launched, encouraging people to share how books or people from the world of books have inspired or impacted on their life, with Alan Cumming,Ian Rankin, Louis De Bernieres, Andy McNab and Greg Proops all set to share their own reasons for their love of literature.

Marc Lambert from the Scottish Book Trust, said: "The huge personal benefits in health and wellbeing that flow from spending just a short time each day lost within a book are now widely documented and understood.

"But it seems that people still remain to be convinced. Can a book really transform the way we feel? Can it lighten your mood, ensure a better night's sleep, steal away loneliness?

"This year we are challenging Scots from all walks of life to try this miracle cure out for themselves - and to share their stories and results with us in a celebration of all the things books and reading can do.

"This challenge sits at the centre of Book Week Scotland, but the full programme is many and varied, and offers something for everyone on a national basis."

Running from November 23 to November 29, a collection of short stories and poems written by budding Scottish authors about a 'journey' has been published with over 150,000 to be shared during Book Week.

Bringing books into the workplace, the campaign is also encouraging organisations to transform neglected areas of their office into a reading areas where staff can take their break with a book in hand.

Aly Barr, Acting Head of Literature, Languages and Publishing, Creative Scotland, said: “As a nation of readers, people in Scotland spend more time lost in a good book than any other culture-related leisure activity and Book Week Scotland is a fantastic way to celebrate this.

“Taking part in creative activities such as reading and writing has the power to transform lives, making an invaluable contribution to health and wellbeing and I’d encourage people of all ages to get involved in the #ThankBooks campaign and share their own stories about how reading has transformed their lives.”
